The displacement of the religious festival La Enrama de San Isidro Labrador due to alcohol consumption in southern Mexico.

Abstract

This study aims to analyze the displacement of the religious festival La Enrama de San Isidro Labrador due to alcohol consumption in Comalcalco, Tabasco. It is a qualitative research method using a phenomenological approach, with an exploratory descriptive level and a cross-sectional scope. The techniques used were non-participant observation and semi-structured interviews. The unit of analysis was people who attend the San Isidro Labrador Church in the municipality of Comalcalco, Tabasco, Mexico. Among the findings is the acceptance of the change in the date of the Catholic Enrama to avoid confrontations or problems with people who consume intoxicating beverages. The subjects under analysis were willing to remake the entire cultural religious tradition on a day other than the one designated by the Eucharistic calendar. It is concluded that this displacement emphasizes the dominance of the influence of alcoholism on the population and in daily social processes. Future lines of research include the perceptions of new generations of festival-goers about the changes and how they impact their identity.
