The conceptualization of culture for Cultural Management. Multiculturalism and Interculturalism

Abstract

On the one hand, the discussion about the conceptualization of culture at the beginning of the 21st century has adopted an infinite diversity of ways, as well as it makes no difference between the different versions used. On the other hand, it is recognized by its reaction to the ethnocentric centralism, as it was defined during the 20^th century under the names of multiculturalism and interculturalism. The first acknowledges the multiplicity of cultural expressions, but still under a centralized understanding of definition and acceptance. The second reacts against this issue, promoting the coexistence of a variety of conceptions and ways, as broad as the vital experiences of human groups. This article suggests to understand a useful way to solve these dilemmas is not searching for a definition or a final conception, rather than understanding that the trouble is made by the “device” character (as understood by Gilles Deleuze and Michel Foucault) of the conception of culture and the need to “deterritorialize” it through a complex conception of field (as in Pierre Bourdieu) or “metaconcept” (Edgar Morin) that allows its broadening as a multiple, fluid and dynamic fact, accessible and usable for any kind of social collectivity.
