Abstract

A qualitative study conducted in Otavalo, Ecuador, analyzed the role of agroecological tourism in the revitalization of the Kichwa language and the preservation of the community's cultural identity. The research approach focused on a case study involving 10 community members who were directly involved in agroecological tourism and who were bilingual in Kichwa and Spanish. Data collection was conducted through in-depth interviews and participant observation. The results of the study revealed a highly positive impact on the revitalization of the Kichwa language. The interaction with tourists significantly boosted the use and appreciation of Kichwa, especially among young people, who began to appreciate their linguistic heritage in a deeper way. In addition, agroecological tourism strengthens the preservation of cultural identity by promoting the appreciation of local traditions and handicrafts. The community was able to share their ancestral wisdom and reaffirm their identity through these interactions, which contributed greatly to the preservation of their unique and valuable cultural heritage.
