Resumen

En este ensayo, el autor reflexiona en primera persona sobre la historia y el desarrollo de las investigaciones sobre el tercer sector y la filantropía en los Estados Unidos. Su discurso se presenta en contraste con el contexto político y social tanto de su país como internacionalmente, a lo largo de sus cuarenta años de carrera profesional, a partir de su relación con los más renombrados actores de su campo y de su experiencia dentro y al frente de distintas instituciones académicas y organizaciones filantrópicas. Del mismo modo, reflexiona sobre las tendencias que la filantropía ha adquirido en el momento actual a partir de la redistribución de la riqueza que ha venido ocurriendo en las últimas décadas y del fenómeno de la megafundación, asociado a la incorporación de lenguajes y prácticas influidas por la comunidad empresarial. Con un alto sentido de responsabilidad social, el autor apuesta por el papel vigilante y el compromiso crítico de la investigación académica ante el dilema de morder la mano que da de comer.
